For the 1978 model year the OMC stringer sterndrive was redesigned, the old electric shift lower gear housing was replaced with
this new hydraulic shift assist, large diameter, V6 gear housing. The hydraulic shift assist lower gear housing did not prove to
be reliable and was replaced with a mechanical shift lower gear housing on the 1979 and newer V6 outboards and the 1981
and newer OMC sterndrives. OMC made available to owners of 1978-1980 sterndrives a mechanical shift lower gear housing
conversion kit for a very low price. This kit consisted of a complete lower gear housing, an ESA (electronic shift assist) box,
ESA activation switch and two shift overstroke switches.
It is the customer’s responsibility to determine if a 1978-1980 OMC sterndrive has the original hydraulic shift assist
lower gear housing or has been converted to the mechanical shift lower gear housing.
